The Pronoia Effect
A True Story
By Brooke Hall
★★★★★ 4.9 on Amazon
She built the dream.
She lost it.
What she found set her free.
What if the thing keeping you stuck isn't your circumstances, but the way you've learned to survive them?
The Pronoia Effect is a true story about ambition, collapse, and what happens when the ways you learned to survive stop serving you.
Brooke Hall co-founded Light City, the first large-scale light, music, and innovation festival in America. 400,000 people came.
Then she lost it. Publicly.
What followed was a decade of unlearning everything she thought she knew about how life works.
The book closes with The Pronoia Practice, a simple three-step practice for getting out of survival mode and making the shift from fighting life to trusting it.
This isn't about creating a new life. It's about what happens when you finally stop fighting this one.

Praise for The Pronoia Effect
Forgiveness is difficult work, but it's the first step on the way to generous contribution and a chance to be fully awake and alive. Brooke's book is an epic poem, a journey and a practice.”
—Seth Godin, author of The Practice
Poetic, interesting and in the end very wise.”
—Jack Kornfield, author of A Path With Heart
In The Pronoia Effect, author Brooke Hall traces the unraveling of the life she fought to control—and the quiet, radical shift that followed when she finally let go. What emerges is a deeply personal exploration of trust, showing how everything can change when we stop resisting reality and begin to move with it.”
—Debbie Millman, author of Why Design Matters
Brooke shows us the possibilities that arrive when we ‘pay attention to what lights us up’ and trust that life knows what it’s doing. From the magical liveliness of the Baltimore renaissance through the turmoil of the human experience, she leads the way toward radical acceptance and renewed faith.”
—Nancy Murray, Award-winning author of One Child for Another
The Pronoia Effect pulled me in completely. I couldn’t stop reading. Brooke Hall has written something incredibly intimate and alive. Her truth-telling carries a kind of wisdom that doesn’t just move the reader emotionally; it awakens something within them.”

The Pronoia Effect turns the concepts of adversity and grief on their heads. What if we’re not struggling to stay afloat, but being carried to where we need to be? What if the lighthouse is inside us? I devoured this book, and you will, too.”

FROM THE BOOK
Everything I did to save my life was slowly suffocating it.
A business I had built with conviction began to slip through my hands. The community we had gathered fell away. Relationships strained. My digestion rebelled. My nervous system forgot how to rest. The future I had been moving toward vanished.
When something mattered and felt threatened, I knew what to do. I tried harder. I stayed busy. I stayed numb. I told myself that if I kept pushing, things would somehow be okay.
I confused doing more with progress. I believed that if I stayed one step ahead, nothing could catch me off guard.
It worked for a long time.
Until it didn't.
There is a particular discomfort that comes when the old explanations stop working but the new ones have not arrived yet. When effort no longer produces results. When certainty evaporates but nothing replaces it. You can't push your way out of that space. You can only stay inside the not knowing, without a map, without guarantees, without the version of you that used to know what to do.
I kept asking the same question.
Why is this happening to me?
We built something extraordinary. Then we lost it.
